Welcome to the Penguin's Ponderings

Mostly the meandering thoughts of a plain vanilla recently retired gal that likes to read, travel, and is establishing life now with new rules and a new environment with a trusty spouse that is a best friend as well.

Last Saturday

As I placed my hand over my heart during the Star Spangled Banner at the Lady Jayhawk versus the Lady Wildcat game on Saturday, it was a moment of reflection. It was the first time since our new President Obama took office. Hope and expectancy in the future is very much present, knowing that we must all sacrifice to get out of the mess our country is in. Not sure the politicians are up to that!

A few minutes before, there was a moment of silence in honor and memory of Kay Yow, a well-known larger-than-life person in the sports world (women's basketball coach at NC State), who passed away Saturday morning after a very long fight with breast cancer.
It always causes reflections about my own cancer heroes, some living examples, some in heaven - Cherie Hicks, Janet Chitty, Richard Smith, Carol Aderholt are among those in heaven.
Lydia Swize, Gayle Ketterlin, Mary Ann McCann and others that have battled and thus far defeated the cancer monster.

All serve as upbeat, positive, determined people that have taught me so much about faith, determination, positive attitude and an attitude of gratefulness.
